What is Udyam
3 classification bands.
Udyam (formerly MSME / Udyog Aadhaar) is a free Government of India registration that classifies your business as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise. The certificate unlocks priority-sector lending, government tender access, subsidies, and protection under the MSME Development Act. The registration itself is free on udyamregistration.gov.in. What we do, for a documentation fee, is pick the right NIC code, calculate the investment-and-turnover classification correctly, and submit it so it sticks.
Udyam classifies enterprises based on combined investment in plant + machinery / equipment and annual turnover:
- Micro: Investment < ₹1 Cr AND turnover < ₹5 Cr
- Small: Investment < ₹10 Cr AND turnover < ₹50 Cr
- Medium: Investment < ₹50 Cr AND turnover < ₹250 Cr
The certificate is permanent (no renewal). Classification auto-updates each year based on your filed ITR and GST returns.

Why pay for something that's free? Because the wrong NIC code or wrong classification means redoing it, and because we'll spot whether your investment figure should include or exclude depreciation, GST, second-hand machinery, etc., which the portal doesn't explain.
Common mistakes
Where DIY Udyam registrations cause problems later.
The Udyam portal is genuinely free and the form looks simple, but a wrong entry today shows up later as a rejected loan, a denied tender bid, or a forced reclassification. The patterns we see most often:
- Wrong NIC code. There are 600+ NIC codes and the portal lets you pick freely. A bakery filed under "food and beverage services" instead of "manufacture of bakery products" loses MSME priority sector lending and gets reclassified at the first GST audit. We pick the code that matches your actual GST returns and business activity.
- Investment figure with non-eligible items. Investment in plant and machinery has specific inclusion / exclusion rules: land, building, and pollution-control equipment are excluded; depreciated value is used rather than original cost; second-hand machinery has separate treatment. The portal does not explain any of this. Filing with the wrong figure pushes you into the wrong classification band.
- Turnover from an old ITR. Classification looks at the latest filed ITR. People often use last year's number because it is handy. If the latest ITR has a higher turnover, the classification auto-updates later, but bank or tender applications submitted in the meantime get rejected against the outdated certificate.
- Aadhaar of the wrong person. For proprietorships it is the proprietor's Aadhaar; for partnerships, the managing partner; for companies, the authorised signatory. Filing with the wrong Aadhaar means the certificate cannot be linked to the business's GST or PAN, and a fresh registration is needed from scratch.
- Skipping GSTIN linkage. If you already have GST, the Udyam form should include the GSTIN at the time of filing. Skipping it means classification does not auto-update each year, and you have to file a re-classification request manually when you grow into a higher band.
Why Get N Dial
We file the registration that the portal is free for, so it does not come back.
Udyam registration on udyamregistration.gov.in is genuinely free, and we say so in every conversation. What you are paying us for is the work around the registration, the work that determines whether your certificate stands up at the bank counter, at a tender bid evaluation, or at an MSME loan audit 5 years from now.
- 12+ years · 900+ clients · 10+ countries. We have filed Udyam (and the predecessor MSME / Udyog Aadhaar) for restaurants, textile retailers, garment manufacturers, spice exporters, SaaS founders, and printing presses across Kerala. The NIC code archive in our internal CRM has 600+ codes mapped to specific business activities. We look yours up in 30 seconds, not 30 minutes.
- ISO 9001:2015 documented intake. The same checklist on every file. Investment math is double-checked against your latest GST and ITR by a second consultant before submission. If your first consultant is on leave, the next person picks the file up from the checklist, not from a Slack thread.
- Honesty about the free portal. We do not pretend the registration costs money. The hero of this page says so. Our pricing block says so. Our consulting fee is for the documentation work: picking the right NIC code, classifying you under the latest MSME definition, and making sure you do not redo it. If you would rather do it yourself, we will tell you which page on the portal to start at.

FAQ
Common questions.
Is Udyam registration really free? Why pay you?
Yes, the registration on udyamregistration.gov.in is free. Our fee is for the documentation work: picking the right NIC code (there are 600+), classifying correctly under the latest MSME definition, and making sure you don't have to redo it. If you're comfortable doing it yourself, we recommend you do, we're happy to point you to the right page.
Does Udyam expire? Do I have to renew?
The certificate doesn't expire; it's permanent. But your classification (Micro / Small / Medium) auto-updates each year based on your ITR and GST filings. If you grow past a threshold, you reclassify automatically. No paperwork from your side.
Can a proprietorship get Udyam, or only companies?
Both. Proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, Pvt Ltds, OPCs, Hindu Undivided Families, co-operative societies, trusts, all can register. Only Aadhaar of the owner / signatory is needed.
Can I get Udyam without GST?
Yes, if your turnover is below the GST threshold. Udyam doesn't require GST. If you already have GST, the portal pulls turnover data from your returns automatically (which is why classification auto-updates).
Free registration, done right the first time.
