About FSSAI
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is the central regulator for food businesses in India. Every food business (manufacturer, processor, restaurant, caterer, home-kitchen, food truck, online food seller, importer, distributor) needs an FSSAI registration or license. The tier depends on annual turnover: Basic (under ₹12 lakh), State (₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore), Central (above ₹20 crore or import/export). Timelines vary from 7 working days (Basic) to 60 working days (Central). We file, follow up, and handle inspection coordination.

3 FSSAI tiers
The right one for you.
| Tier | Annual turnover | Validity | Govt fee | Our timeline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Registration | Under ₹12 lakh | 1–5 years | ₹100/year | 7–15 working days |
| State License | ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore | 1–5 years | ₹2,000–5,000/year | 30–45 working days |
| Central License | Above ₹20 crore OR import/export/multi-state | 1–5 years | ₹7,500/year | 45–60 working days |
Tier upgrades happen automatically with turnover growth. We'll flag the upgrade window if you're approaching a threshold.

Common mistakes
Where FSSAI applications hit walls.
FSSAI looks straightforward on the FoSCoS portal: pick a tier, upload documents, wait for the certificate. In practice, the wrong tier choice and inspection-day surprises cause most timeline extensions. The patterns we see most often:
- Filing under the wrong tier. A home-based cake business at ₹8 lakh turnover fits Basic Registration. The same business at ₹15 lakh moves into State License. People often pick Basic to keep the fee low even when projected turnover is above ₹12 lakh. The tier upgrade has to happen anyway, and you end up doing 2 applications instead of 1. We pick the tier that matches your projected turnover at year-end, not today.
- Selling food online without FSSAI. Instagram, WhatsApp, Swiggy, Zomato, and quick-commerce sellers each need FSSAI from day one. The home-business assumption "I am too small" is incorrect: the turnover threshold for online food sales is effectively zero. Operating without a number is technically an offence under the Food Safety Act, and the number must appear on your social media bio if you take orders there.
- Layout plan that does not match the inspection. For State and Central tiers, the submitted layout plan must match the premises. We have seen kitchens with cold storage marked but not built yet, processing rooms shown without the required raw–finished separation, and dish-washing areas in the wrong corner. The inspector flags the gap on site, the application stalls until rebuilt, and the certificate is delayed by months.
- Municipality NOC not collected upfront. State and Central licenses need a No Objection Certificate from the local panchayat or municipality. People assume FSSAI will issue without it. It will not. Getting the NOC takes 7 to 20 days depending on the office. We start that parallel application on Day 1 so it does not become the bottleneck at the end.
- Missing FSSAI number on packaging after issue. Once you have an FSSAI number, every food package, label, menu card, and social media bio has to display it. First-month skips trigger consumer complaints and warning notices. We hand you a packaging-format template with the number and the standard FSSAI logo on the day the certificate is issued.
Why Get N Dial
Food licenses across Kerala kitchens, restaurants, and packaged-food units since 2014.
FSSAI is not a one-form-and-wait service. It is tier-dependent paperwork, layout review, inspection coordination, and post-issue compliance, each step a potential bottleneck. We have shipped applications across all 3 tiers and all the common food business types in Kerala, and we know which step trips up which kind of applicant.
- 12+ years · 900+ clients · 10+ countries. FSSAI Basic for cloud kitchens, home-bakers, and tea shops; State License for mid-size restaurants, packaged-food brands, and caterers; Central License for food manufacturers with PAN-India distribution and food importers / exporters. The Kerala-specific quirks (district health office practices, FSSAI Kerala regional preferences, panchayat NOC patterns) are documented in our internal CRM rather than re-learned each time.
- ISO 9001:2015 documented intake. Every file runs through the same documented checklist. Tier selection is double-checked against projected turnover. Layout plans are reviewed by a second consultant before submission. The municipality NOC is started in parallel with the FSSAI filing rather than waited for at the end.
- Pass-through government fees. Basic Registration: ₹100 per year. State License: ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per year. Central License: ₹7,500 per year. All passed through at the actual amount. Our professional fee is flat per tier, quoted in writing. Inspection coordination is included in our fee for State and Central. We do not bill separately when the inspector calls to schedule.
- Local inspector relationships. The FSSAI Kerala regional office, district health offices in Malappuram and Ernakulam, and the inspectors who cover restaurants in Edappal, Thrissur, and Kochi are people we have worked with for over 10 years. We know their inspection preferences and their typical clarification questions. That muscle memory is the difference between a 30-day timeline and a 60-day one.

FAQ
Common questions.
Is FSSAI mandatory for home-based food businesses on Instagram or WhatsApp?
Yes. The moment you sell food commercially (even from home, even one-off, even on Instagram or via WhatsApp orders), you need at least the Basic Registration. For home-based businesses earning under ₹12 lakh annually, Basic Registration is enough. The certificate has to be displayed on packaging and on your social media bio if you take orders there.
What's the difference between FSSAI Registration and FSSAI License?
They're technically different documents. "Registration" is the Basic tier (turnover under ₹12 lakh, simpler process, just a 14-digit number). "License" is the State or Central tier (more documentation, possibly inspection, full food-safety compliance audit). Most people use the terms interchangeably, but the legal forms are distinct.
How long does FSSAI really take?
Basic: 7–15 working days, no inspection. State: 30–45 working days, may include an inspection. Central: 45–60 working days, inspection mandatory. If the inspector finds gaps, the timeline can extend. We coordinate the inspection on your behalf.
Can I display my FSSAI number while my application is in process?
No. The FSSAI number is issued only after the certificate is granted. Operating a food business between application and approval is technically a violation, though it's rarely enforced for Basic-tier applicants. For State / Central applicants, we recommend waiting for the certificate before starting operations.
